Langkawi, the far most northern holiday retreat in the country will receive an additional boost in tourist from now as Airasia the largest low cost airline in the region will be flying directly from the island to Shenzen, China.
A signing ceremony witnessed by Prime Minister, Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak, took place between Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Langkawi Development Authority in making the route a done deal.
The direct flight is bound to generate higher visitor to Langkawi which is seeing in popularity as a preferred holiday destination in the region. According to Airasia direct international tourists have increased from 83,754 passengers in 2015 to 187,433 passengers in 2016 – an increase of 120% in growth. Contribution to RM300 million to GDP, based on the 12 times multiplier effect. Last year for the first time international tourists outnumbered domestic tourists and has flown over 1 million tourists to the island with 238 weekly flights. Setting a target of 3 million with the new route plan, the vision is to make Langkawi as connected as Phuket or greater.
Chinese tourist make the largest number of travelers globally, and it will be a travesty if Malaysia didn’t tap into the market, Langkawi has always been a secret getaway with its pristine warm waters and smooth sandy beaches. The preserved lush tropical forest dating back to millions of years, is another factor the island receives eco travelers wishing to enjoy the quietness against the serene backdrop.
Airasia is offering promotional fares in conjunction with the event with RM159 all in one way to Shenzhen from Langkawi from now till 27th august with travel period till 25th February.
