From its humble beginnings as a small festival in Australia, SHORT+SWEET grew to be the biggest little festival in the world that is celebrating 10 years in Malaysia, with 10 weeks of 10-minute theatre.
The celebration involves 14 countries and more than 30 cities, with its latest addition of SHORT+SWEET Hollywood that will enter its second year with a new short film category.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, the SHORT+SWEET family will also be growing, receiving over 80 scripts from local playwrights in 2017. The theatre will run for a record-breaking duration of three weeks this year and will introduce a new category as part of the tenth anniversary line up.
All in all, close to 500 artistes will be competing for top honours in the theatre, musical, stand-up comedy, song, dance and junior dance (16 and below) categories.
“Since the festival only premiers new works that are 10 minutes or less, artistes are pushed to stretch their creative muscles. For audiences, there is an element of surprise because you never quite know what to expect,” explains Dato’ Faridah Merican, Director of SHORT+SWEET Malaysia Festival.
She also mentions SHORT+SWEET has driven artistes to create and collaborate, which proved to be an invaluable springboard for emerging talents. Indirectly, quite a few talented individuals were unearthed from previous SHORT+SWEET festivals that have gone on to land major roles in other productions.
Performers will not only participate for the fame and glory, they will also be competing for a place at the Gala Finals and ultimately win prizes such as the highly coveted Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Award for Creative Excellence. Although the judges of the competition will consist of industry experts of each different category, the audience also has a role to play when it comes to selecting a winner for the Audience Choice Award.
