The Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah AO recently addressed the Leadership Council of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) meeting in New York, USA.
There, he shared his viewpoints on the importance of sustainable development, Sunway Group’s initiatives, and underscores that all sectors of society, the private sector, academia, civil society and every single individual have an obligation to come together towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.
The Leadership Council comprise of experts on sustainable development from academia, business, civil society, and the public sector from across the globe. In his address, he states: “It is particularly relevant in this time of budget restraints and economic uncertainty that we recognise that realising the SDGs is not the sole responsibility of Governments alone. It requires the commitment of all sectors of society – the private sector, academia, civil society, and, of course, every single individual.”
Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah also mentions that there have been more than 25,000 trees planted in Sunway City and a complete eco-system was restored, home to over 150 species of flora and fauna. Sunway City also has its own public transport system with buses that run on electricity on specially designed elevated bus lanes. Additionally, almost 50% of the city is open space and 24% of it is green space.
“And we are not done yet,” he says confidently. He continues by sharing that there are plans to integrate technology even more deeply to establish Sunway City as a model ‘smart, sustainable city’ of the 21st century.
