Budget 2018: Pulau Pangkor is Tax Free Island

Prime minister, Dato’ Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak announced the 2018 Malaysia Budget. For the tourism sector, the prime minister aims to promote Malaysia as one of the top travel destination.

To that end, the year 2020 has been announced as Visit Malaysia Year 2020. The government has announced loan of RM20billion for Tabung PKS, as well as an allocation of RM1billion budget for tourism infrastructure with an additional RM500million for homestay and eco-tourism development.

Along with that is an introduction for e-Visa for tourists from around the world. There will also be tax incentives for new hotels of four stars and above until end of December 2020. A RM30million allocation has been designated for promoting Malaysia as top destination for medical tourism.

Pulau Pangkor has also been named as a tax free island, exclusive of alcohol and cars. Separate budget allocation for airports in Malaysia includes Penang, Langkawi, Sandakan and more.
