Malaysian Gaming Industry is LEVEL-ing UP

The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) launches an incubator space for elite game startups to collaborate, support and accelerate businesses. Located in Bangsar South, LEVEL UP Inc (first announced in November 2016) is created to provide promising game developers and smaller studios with the necessary resources to kick-start their journey in the gaming industry.

This will help the small to medium game startups get comprehensive support that will drive the local games creation market.

During the event, Datuk Seri dr. Salleh Said Keruak, Minister at the Communications and multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) to LEVEL UP Inc met with representatives from MDEC: Datuk Yasmin Mahmood, CEO of MDEC and Hasnul Hadi Samsudin, Vice President of the Creative Content and Technologies division. Both sides got the opportunity to exchange views on the development of Malaysia’s games industry and how it could generate positive revenue for the country, alongside eSports.

“Malaysia’s ICT industry has developed into one of the most important economic sectors and we are confident that the trend we observe in this industry today will continue to expand with more of the younger generation of Malaysians making their mark through games,” says Datuk Seri Dr. Salleh Said Keruak.

Meanwhile, Datuk Yasmin comments: “Malaysia has become a premium location for games and creative content development in recent years, thanks to a growing interest in the industry and the quality of locally developed games. With the government acknowledging game-related sectors as an economic contributor, we believe there is a massive prospect for Malaysians looking to turn their passion for games as a career path.”

Designated as the country’s games production hub, LEVEL UP Inc occupies a 6,000 sq ft of space, fully equipped with customised brainstorming rooms, high-end game lab and boasts an impressive regional and corporate partners including Google, Sony Interactive Entertainment, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Unity Technologies , Discovery Nusantara Capital, Nitro.Live, Tokyo Contents Incubation Center and Media Prima Labs.

Currently, LEVEL UP is home to up-and-coming game developers such as Metronomik, Magnus Games Studio, Weyrdworks Studio, Kaigan Games, 7th Beat Studios, NightMorning, Game Taiko and Pixels Tail
