DHL Express invests RM11 million for Southern Malaysia Gateway

With an investment of RM11 million, DHL Express, the world’s leading international express services provider will start construction of its Southern Malaysia Gateway in Johor this year. The Gateway will be purpose-built to meet the growing demands of Malaysia’s logistics sector, especially within the southern region.

Equipped with 50,000 sq ft of warehouse space, the facility serves as a combined Gateway and Service Centre for the import and export of shipments from Southern Malaysia to the world, and for customer pickups and deliveries within Johor. The completion of the facility is planned for the first quarter of 2019. The new Gateway is expected to strengthen DHL Express’ global network and facilitate the movement of e-commerce shipments in and out of Southern Malaysia, with the e-commerce sector in Malaysia projected to contribute at least RM114 billion to the country’s GDP by 2020.

Christopher Ong, Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia & Brunei says, “We are excited by the double-digit growth in export we have seen in Malaysia in 2017 and are confident that our new Gateway in Johor will further support the growth of the nation’s economy while meeting our customers’ demands for best in class logistics services.”

As part of the company’s commitment towards achieving its zero emissions target by 2050, solar panels will also be outfitted at the Gateway. Additionally, DHL Express Malaysia has signed an MoU with GreenTech Malaysia to introduce several fully electric vans into its vehicle fleet as a pilot.

Ong adds, “By investing in such green technologies, not only does this bring us closer towards achieving our zero emissions target by 2050, it also allows DHL Express Malaysia to remain at the forefront of combating climate change and provide an opportunity for our customers to participate in this endeavor.”

Dr. Mohd Azman Zainul Abidin, Group GEO of Greentech Malaysia says, “Malaysia’s transportation target is to have 100% energy efficient vehicles (EEV) by 2030; the automotive industry is embarking on greater technologies with the aim to intensify lower carbon mobility initiatives in the country.”
