Malaysian Timber Industry: A Promising Future

The Malaysian Timber Conference returns with its second edition to be held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur on 25 July 2019. The conference will address some of the timber industry’s perennial challenges and more importantly, the best practices which timber-based manufacturers should employ to further enhance their business.

With the theme, “The Future is Now”, the conference, with its distinguished panel of speakers comprising thought leaders, will provide a new paradigm of thinking that will ensure the sustainability of the timber industry.
“The timber industry has a promising future and we need to move with the times by innovating and incorporating the right business practices that will ensure that the industry remains as a viable economic contributor for the country,” said MTC Chairman Dato’ Low Kian Chuan.

Among the challenges affecting the industry are the US-China trade war, global economic downturn as well as raw material and labour shortages.

“It can no longer be business as usual. We need to look ahead and this conference, which is one-of-its-kind, serves as a platform for strategic dialogues that can bring fresh ideas on how we can overcome the challenges the industry is facing,” said Low.

There will be much to gain from the thought-provoking presentations of the speakers who come from United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Brazil, Myanmar and Malaysia.

The conference will be officiated by the Minister of Primary Industries YB Puan Teresa Kok while the Deputy Minister of Primary Industries YB Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin will deliver the keynote closing address.

The speakers are Azran Osman Rani, Lee Heng Guie, Dr. Ivan Tomaselli, Alice Rawsthorn, Nigel Hollis, Dr. Eric Leong, Michael O’Hara, Dr. Maung Maung Than, Marc Pfetzing and Dr. Jean-Marc Roda.
