Skim Permulaan Usahawan Bumiputera” or better known as SUPERB closed the curtains of its 14th series during an award ceremony that was held on 24 November 2019. Based on a business pitching concept, SUPERB is organised by Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputera (TERAJU), an agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs to provide the opportunity for youths or start-up Bumiputera companies to elevate creative, innovative and critical thinking business ideas.
Business ideas and projects that were presented by participants emphasised on six (6) main themes namely digital economy, industrial revolution 4.0, social enterprise, sharing economy, creative & arts industry, health, food innovation and agriculture. The themes introduced at SUPERB 2019 were based on the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030 which highlights the focus to promote the proposed 15 Key Economic Growth Activities (KEGA).
Since the opening of submissions on the 31st of July, SUPERB 2019 has received a total of 1,179 submissions from all around Malaysia involving a number of 135 entrepreneurs from the Northern Region, 680 entrepreneurs from the Central Region, 112 entrepreneurs from the Southern Region, 144 entrepreneurs from the East Coast Region whilst Sabah and Sarawak submission numbers were 70 and 38 entrepreneurs respectively. Below are the percentage summary of SUPERB 2019 total submissions by regions:

The application of SUPERB 2019 was divided into two (2) categories which are the business/prototype development phase or pre-commercial or commercialisation phase. From the total submissions received, 40 percent were from the business/prototype development phase with the remaining submissions at the pre-commercial or commercialisation phase. Below are the summary of SUPERB 2019 submissions by categories:
SUPERB 2019 kicked off with a series of roadpitch tours that were held at several locations: Alor Setar (Kedah), Kuantan (Pahang), Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), Kuching (Sarawak), Johor Bahru (Johor) and Kuala Lumpur to shortlist the applications received. From this stage, a total of 116 entrepreneurs were chosen to attend the first round of bootcamp which was held from 3 to 6 November 2019 in Kuala Lumpur. Participants were exposed to business pitching tips and techniques and were assisted to fine-tune their business ideas and models during the four-day bootcamp. The participants then proceeded to compete at the semi final stage on 7 and 8 November 2019.
60 entrepreneurs successfully qualified to present their business ideas in front of professional juries consisting of successful and experienced Bumiputera entrepreneurs, industry players and top leaders from other government agencies at the finals which took place on 23 and 24 November 2019. They were divided into 6 groups to pitch their improvised business ideas during these two days.
A total of 26 winners were announced during the SUPERB 2019 Dinner & Award Night which was held at Royale Chulan Damansara Hotel on 24 November 2019. The business/prototype formation & development phase winners will be receiving a business development grant worth up to RM 100,000. While businesses at the pre-commercial or commercialisation phase winners will be receiving a business development grant up to RM 500,000.
Yang Berusaha Encik Megat Mohd Yatim Bin Megat Hamid, Acting Chief Executive Officer TERAJU said, “SUPERB’s grant will be channeled in stages according to the product and business progress and SUPERB winners will be supervised by TERAJU and it’s collaborative agency partners. Throughout the five (5) years of this programme implementation, SUPERB has produced a total of 201 start-up entrepreneurs or Bumiputera start-up companies and this does not include the numbers of 2019’s winners.”
Evaluation on the business ideas which were presented by the SUPERB 2019 finalists were based on some major criterias such as business idea implementation capability, business viability and creative & innovative business or ideas.
