MyBHA urges government to look into protecting hotel owners

The Malaysia Budget Hotel Association (MyBHA) has urged the government to draft an act to protect hotel owners and operators from the impact of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

A report by Bernama highlights the Association’s concerns with the Special Relief Fund (SRF), with many considering the government to be less friendly towards the industry.

National deputy president, Sri Ganesh who was quoted in the report said the banking and financial institutions have been avoiding the hotel industry, as they categories the industry as a high-risk.

He further claimed that property owners were allegedly taking advantage of the current situation as they were being reluctant in allowing a waiver or providing rental discounts.

According to the Association, hotel owners nationwide are worried they might lose possession of the their hotels, due to non-payment of rentals to property owners.

“This is not fair for our members who are making losses,” he said.

The tourism industry in the country has taken a severe hit, with many losing their jobs in the hospitality sector.
