Wholesale and retail trade sales decline by 1.2 percent in November 2020

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) reported a RM110.4 billion sales value of Wholesale and Retail Trade in November 2020, down by 1.2 percent year-on-year. Both retail trade and wholesale trade contracted by 2.3 percent (RM1.1 billion) to RM44.8 billion from Nov 2019 and 0.7 percent (RM0.4 billion) to RM52.8 billion respectively.

In contrast, motor vehicles continued a growth of 1.2 percent achieving RM12.8 billion.

Additionally, in November 2020, the volume index of wholesale and retail Trade registered a growth of -1.6 percent year-on-year recording 129.5 points. Retail trade registered a decline of 3.2 percent, while wholesale trade registered a decline of 0.5 percent.

Notably, sales value generated by Wholesale Trade is RM52.8 billion in November 2020, a decline of 0.7 percent as compared to November 2019.

Other Specialised Wholesale and Whole on a Fee or Contract Basis recorded a fall of 6.8 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively. The sales of this sub-sector declined by 1.2 percent for their monthly comparison.

Wholesale Trade’s volume index recorded 128.7 points having contracted by 0.5 percent year-on-year. As for the seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased by 1.0 percent month-on-month.

DOSM revealed the sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of 2.3 percent as compared to November 2019.

Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores, Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores, and Retail Sale of Cultural and Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores contributed to the decrease by -14.6 percent, -6.2 percent, and -5.1 percent, respectively.

Volume Index of Retail Trade registered a -3.2 percent growth to 138.8 points as to November 2019.

Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores, by -13.8 percent, Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores, by -7.6 percent, and Retail Sale of Cultural and Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores, by -5.6 percent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it inched down 0.6 percent compared to October 2020.

On the other hand, DOSM reported Motor Vehicles’ sales value registered a year-on-year growth of 1.2 percent. The upward climb is due to the Sale of Motor Vehicles which recorded 7.1 percent and Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motorcycle 6.3 percent.

The monthly comparison sales of the sub-sector decreased by 0.5 percent.

Sale of Motor Vehicles, by 9.9 percent, and Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motorcycles, by 2.9 percent, grew the volume index of Motor Vehicles by 0.4 percent to reach 105.7 points.
