DOSM: Mixed SPPI results for Malaysia in Q4 2020

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) underlined that the Services Producers Price Index (SPPI) increased by 0.5 percent to 110.1 for Q4 of 2020 in comparison to 109.6 in the same quarter of the preceding year.

Accommodation, Food and Beverage Service Activities (1.5 percent), Real Estate Activities (1.5 percent), Health (1.3 percent), Transportation (0.9 percent), and Education (0.6 percent) are the main sub-sector contributors to the increase.

In contrast, the index for Arts, Entertainment and Recreation, and Information and Communication decreased by 2.2 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively. Index for Professionals remained unchanged.

SPPI declined by 0.2 percent on the quarterly basis with Transportation (0.9 percent), Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (0.9 percent), Real Estate Activities (0.2 percent) and Education (0.1 percent) the main sub-sector contributors.

In contrast, Accommodation, Food and Beverage Service Activities and Health increased by 0.3 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.

Index for Professional, Information and Communication indices remained unchanged.

The SPPI for the Transport sub-sector increased 0.9 percent in Q4 2020 as compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

Freight Air Transport (3.6 percent), Postal Activities (3.1 percent), Courier Activities (3.1 percent), Passenger Air Transport (1.7 percent), Sea and Coastal Water Transport (0.4 percent) and Other Land Transport (0.2 percent) contributed to the increase of the sub-sector.

As for the quarterly comparison, the index declined 0.9 percent over the previous quarter.

This was driven by the index of Passenger Air Transport by 3.8 percent and Postal Activities 0.1 percent. However, the Courier Activities increased by 0.3 percent.

Meanwhile, no changes were recorded for indices of Sea and Coastal Water Transport, Freight Air Transport and Other Land Transport.

The SPPI for Accommodation, Food and Beverage Service Activities increased by 1.5 percent in Q4 2020.

Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (1.8 percent), Beverage Serving Activities (1.0 percent), and Event Catering and Other Food Service Activities (0.2 percent) contributed to the increase of the sub-sector.

Meanwhile, the index of Short-term Accommodation Activities decreased by 0.3 percent.

As for the quarterly comparison, the index increased by 0.3 percent over the previous quarter.

This was driven by Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (0.4 percent), and Beverage Serving Activities (0.2% percent). However, the index for Event Catering and Other Food Service Activities declined 0.1 percent.

Meanwhile, the index of Short-term Accommodation Activities remained unchanged.

The SPPI for Information and Communication sub-sector recorded a decrease of 0.1 percent in Q4 2020 compared to last year and was due to the decline in the Wireless Telecommunication Activities by 0.2 percent.

However, the Computer Programming, Consultancy and Related Activities index showed an increase of 0.1 percent. Quarter-on-quarter comparisons, the index remained unchanged.

No changes for the Professional sub-sector in the annual and quarterly comparison for Q4 2020.

The SPPI for Real Estate Activities increased 1.5 percent as compared to the previous year contributed by index of Real Estate Activities on a Fee or Contract Basis by 1.5 percent.

Meanwhile quarter-on-quarter comparison, the SPPI for Real Estate Activities declined 0.2 percent supported by Real Estate Activities on a Fee or Contract Basis by 0.2 percent.

The SPPI for Education sub-sector increased 0.6 percent in Q4 2020 as compared to last year.

The increase was contributed by Secondary Education (3.4 percent), Higher Education (0.4 percent), and Pre-Primary and Primary Education (0.2 percent). The Other Education indices remained unchanged.

SPPI for Education sub-sector declined 0.1 percent in Q4 2020 compared to the previous quarter and was due to the Higher Education by 0.1 percent.

Secondary Education, Pre-Primary and Primary Education, and Other Education indices remained unchanged.

Year-on-Year (YoY) SPPI for the Health sub-sector recorded an increase by 1.3 percent and was contributed by the index of Hospital Activities (1.5 percent), and Medical and Dental Practice Activities (1.2 percent). However, Other Human Health Activities decreased 0.3 percent.

On a quarterly basis, SPPI for Health recorded an increase by 0.1 percent but Other human Health Activities decreased by 0.1 percent.

The index for the Hospital Activities, and Medical and Dental Practice Activities remained unchanged.

The SPPI for Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation sub-sector declined by 2.2 percent for YoY in Q4 2020. This was due to the Index of Gambling and Betting Activities (2.7 percent), and Other Amusement and Recreation Activities (0.3 percent).

However, the index for Sports Activities increased 0.4 percent.

On a quarterly basis, the SPPI for this sub-sector declined by 0.9 percent and was due to Gambling and Betting Activities (1.2 percent), and Other Amusement & Recreation Activities (0.2 percent).
