SDB’s One-Two-Boost initiative serves to instill ‘purpose’ for special needs people

Selangor Dredging Berhad (SDB) recently embarked on a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for young adults with disabilities called One-Two-Boost (OTB).

Under this CSR initiative, SDB is collaborating with TCM (Traditional Chinese medicine) practitioners Ms. Lin Cze-Pern and Mr Go Pei Heng who are also graduates from the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine to create special prescribed herbal drinks and soup packs to boost one’s overall immunity and well-being. This initiative is also aligned with goals to provide special needs people more job opportunities as well as to promote healthier community living.

“The initiative’s main intention was to launch a series of wellness drinks and soups, all single handedly prepared and packed by young adults with disabilities under proper supervision,” said SDB Managing Director, Ms Teh Lip Kim.

She added that, under this collaboration, new product series would be introduced from time to time for overall wellness and well-being and caters to the different needs of the body. Currently, the Immune-Booster series features soups, tea and drink packs to boost one’s overall immunity. The Nourishing Series consist of the warm and cold bazhen soup which is suitable for males and females, and is known to increase energy and blood circulation. To increase the body’s metabolic rate, the Fat Loss tea is suitable to be consumed daily and combined with a proper diet and exercise regime to see results.

How it works is this: A controlled group of young adults with disabilities would gather on certain days at Wisma Golden Eagle Realty along Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur where SDB’s Headquarters is based before embarking on their tasks.

“SDB’s CSR initiatives are driven by strong purpose, and revolves around offering support while creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to acquire skills that will prepare them for a life on their own,” added Teh Lip Kim.

“Apart from offering them a channel for employment, the projects undertaken by SDB do not just provide temporary assistance but also enable them to learn and improve their work and social skills,” she added.

To purchase the products, customers can fill up the order form here or visit @OneTwoBoost on Facebook.

To date, SDB has also thus far launched four other innovative CSR initiatives.

·         One-Two-Juice was launched back in 2011 to empower and support individuals with disabilities to lead normal independent lives. The fruit juice stall is operated by young adults with disabilities at the courtyard area of Wisma Golden Eagle Realty. Through this effort, they were able to earn salary independently by preparing juices, taking and delivering orders and manning the juice stalls. Subsequently, One-Two-Juice was awarded the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Award under the Social Empowerment Category in 2012 and 2014, emerging as one of the top CSR initiatives in the Asian region.

·         Following the success of One-Two-Juice, One-Two-Wash was introduced in 2014 to create more employment opportunities and cater for individuals with special needs. The car wash initiative was implemented with specially designed processes and learning tools to assist these individuals to learn and follow through better. The operation of One-Two-Wash was also located at Wisma Golden Eagle Realty, which cater to office tenants as well as patrons from the neighbouring office buildings.

·         SDB had further extended its CSR initiatives by collaborating with Milestone Productions to host One-Two-Star in 2019, with the intention to further build the confidence of special needs children. These talented individuals were given the opportunity to showcase and perform their musical talents at a special talent show hosted at Hotel Maya Kuala Lumpur. Prior to the talent show, each participant also attended a complimentary workshop where coaches provided the children with words of encouragement and constructive feedback.

·         In the same year, a soap-making project namely One-Two-Gift has created another opportunity for special needs children to improve their motor skills where these individuals were coached to produce naturally handcrafted soaps made from shea butter that would available for sale throughout the year.
