Celcom Registers Over 300,000 Addition To Subscribers Base In Q1

Celcom Axiata Berhad (Celcom)’s 1QFY21 report has revealed the company’s upward momentum with positive performance across core revenue segments evidenced by 317,000 Q-o-Q increase in its subscriber base.

Amid the impacts of Covid-19 and the Movement Control Order (MCO), Celcom mitigates business impacts by drawing on extensive learnings from 2020 to drive ‘Operational & Service Excellence’ across the organisation.

Idham Nawawi, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad said, “Celcom got off to an encouraging start in 2021 with multiple initiatives across core revenue segments to mitigate impacts from a challenging operating and business environment. The pandemic in 2020 made life difficult for all Malaysians, and we have put great efforts to adapt to the new normal, making it easier for customers to buy and use our services through digitisation.”

This large network operator is currently focusing on the acceleration of network upgrades and optimisation to support traffic growth and the migration of 3G customers to 4G as a prerequisite to achieve JENDELA objectives.

“We will continue to work to raise the quality of our 4G network coverage and experience, as well as ensure our customers have a seamless transition from 3G to 4G. We will also work on expanding the reach of our high-speed broadband convergence services to sustain the growth momentum forward,” he added.

To intensify the effort, Celcom has announced appealing device bundling and product offers to make it easy for clients to move from 3G devices to 4G smartphones through numerous channels, ensuring that Malaysians have access to 4G network services on the country’s largest network.

Celcom reported better operational profitability, increased revenue, and strong market momentum in the first quarter of FY2021, adding more than 1 million subscribers in the previous 12 months. It has demonstrated a corporate agility by adopting the New Normal in its trade and distribution activities, resulting in an increase in new client acquisitions.

Additionally, Celcom had an almost 70 percent increase in data traffic in Q1 2021, with 474 million GB, compared to 1Q20. Data usage per month per user has increased purportedly by 46.1 percent year on year, to 21.8GB per month per user, up from 14.9GB per month per user the previous year.

Addressing the rapid data traffic growth accelerated by the MCO, Celcom strives to ensure high network resiliency and availability. To date, through accelerated network investments, Celcom has upgraded and optimised over 7000 sites, resulting in enhanced capacity and coverage, within both rural and urban areas, and a 93 percent 4G pop coverage nationwide.

“Celcom will also continue to work closely with the government and the industry players to achieve the nation’s digital aspirations and create a ‘win-win-win’ situation that will benefit the rakyat, the government and the digital ecosystem. We look forward to maintain our industry leadership position as Malaysia’s widest network provider,” Idham concluded.
