Tenaga Nasional Berhad To Assist DHL On Zero Carbon Emission Target

ESG, is becoming a larger theme these days than ever before, Environment, Social and Governance is a concept being adopted by multinationals globally to be more conscious on the impact businesses have of the surroundings. Its good to see in Malaysia the trend is also picking up towards this movement, companies already have started engaging with suitable partners (as this can only be achieved collaboratively) in adopting various concepts to be contributing positively including the push towards net zero carbon emission by 2050.

So, when DHL Express Malaysia sought out Tenaga Nasional Berhad the country’s largest utility board to assist on realising the delivery company’s transformation on becoming more greener in its supply chain, the collaboration could not be more appropriate. Both entities are striving to be a more environmentally responsible and this will be a good lead for other businesses to observe.

The aim for DHL parent company, Deutsche Post DHL Group is to accelerate decarbonising of its logistics and the company, to this end the group will be investing RM35billion over the next 10 years in reducing CO2 emission. Adopting the groups mandate, DHL Malaysia has confirmed that its will make deliveries here environmentally friendly and to achieve this it will first be introducing electric vehicles (EV) in its fleet. There are also plans to work on zero carbon and cost reduction initiatives, with the implementation of energy-efficient equipment, building energy management systems, and rooftop solar panels. In marking this strategic alliance towards a common goal, TNB President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Baharin Din said this collaboration can leverage on TNB’s collective expertise in energy management, energy audit, and sustainable energy solutions which can lead towards a more sustainable future for the nation.

TNB has committed to this whole heartedly, the power giant has said that it will build more EV charging stations along the delivery route as the delivery fleet grows. This has gotten DHL excited as well, the company no longer needs to worry of late delivery or stalled vehicles as its promise to customers hinges on fast delivery time. With TNB taking the lead with the installation of EV charging infrastructure on-site and at strategic locations along service routes, DHL Express will roll out the first batch of EV vans at its Kuala Lumpur service centre by early next year.

DHL Malaysia has already began its programs for a energy efficient service, currently it provides additional carbon reporting services that allows customers to analyse their environmental footprint and manage their carbon emissions. Customers can also receive verified calculation and offsetting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for their transport and logistics services through climate protection projects. On supporting DHL on its sustainability journey, TNB has roped in support from the group for instance the solar rooftops will be provided by GSPARX, Maevi for building energy management solutions; and TNB Energy Services for energy audits.

Being the Peninsula’s only power supplier, TNB has also been strengthening its position in sustainable energy sources by adopting new RE technologies of solar, wind, biomass and biogas which currently accounts for 713.2 MW of its generation. The target is to increase RE capacity to 8,300MW by 2025.
