Malaysian Game Developers Heading To Tokyo Game Show 2021

Yes we have game developers amidst our industry if you’re wondering if the headline sounds right, the largest game show in Asia, the Tokyo Game Show 2021 will be held in end September and Malaysia will have a solid representation this year thanks to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).

Held annually and regarded a mecca for game aficionados, TGS hosts some to the biggest names in game development with the likes Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft all taking part, showcasing their best titles and upcoming releases. Undoubtedly this year will be different due to the pandemic, however the industry faced an anomaly as online gaming became the most popular activity during this time and helped to boost revenues for many companies in the gaming industry. 

According to head honcho at Matrade Director Naim Abdul Rahman for Malaysia’s participation the involvement will be on a hybrid format with both online and offline promotions. This time around 5 Malaysian game developers and animation studios will promote their offerings among the games are Re: Legend, Police Sentri, ToGather: Island, Battle of the Rim and Iteno,  

Japan’s gaming industry is valued at US$20.6 billion, and Malaysian gaming and creative content can showcase their capabilities at TGS 2021. Demand for games in Japan is driven primarily by presence of over 70 million gamers including online gamers. Japanese people spend on average of almost 7 hours per week to play games, considered high among other Asian gamers. 

MATRADE’s Trade Commissioner in Tokyo, Mr. Niqman Rafaee Mohd Sahar, said that TGS is an iconic show and major games exhibition in Japan and Asia. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the show since its inception in 1996.  Adapting to the new norm amid the ongoing pandemic challenge, TGS makes a debut into a hybrid event, comprising an ‘Online’ participation which represents a virtual exhibition, online business matching, online webinars as well as online play trial, and an ‘Offline’ participation which offers a physical venue for industry players and local visitors to experience new games through video streaming studios and trial play at the exhibition hall.

A total of 372 exhibitors will be participating both online and offline including Malaysian companies. This year’s participation in TGS also includes major players such as Microsoft, Square Enix, Konami, BANDAI NAMCO, CAPCOM, SEGA / ATLUS and others.

Japan remains as Malaysia’s 4th largest trading partner with total trade amounting around USD30 billion annually. For the period of January-June 2021, total trade with Japan grew by 22.1% to USD18.04 billiTGS
