TNB Critical Entity In National Recovery Plan

New Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has expressed his willingness to support the utility’s leadership in fulfilling its responsibility towards the people and country.

The commitment is timely as TNB is in a negotiation with the Energy Commission (EC) to finalise the Regulatory Period 3 (RP3) under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) mechanism which will be implemented next year. “I am proud and satisfied with the briefing on its future plans to me. We appreciate the huge contribution by the energy sector towards the benefit of the rakyat,” he said during his first working visit to TNB Headquarters.

The three-year RP3 period is scheduled to start on 1 January 2022 following the expiry of RP2 which was extended until 31 December 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The implementation of RP3 is expected to enable TNB to enhance its role in the National Recovery Plan including aspects of tariff review and capital expenditure for the next three years.

“TNB has a huge social responsibility to give the best services to the people. But at the same time, TNB has to be able to balance certain planning aspects to ensure that they can fulfil the industry’s requirement and continue helping the people. “I am committed to ensure this balance. I will give my support to TNB’s leadership to find the best solution in balancing the responsibilities,” he added.

Being the only power utility in Peninsular home to 85% of the country’s population, TNB is the heartbeat powering the community and industries forward. As Malaysians reel from the onslaught of the pandemic, the Government has looked to state run company’s to alleviate some of the burden the people had endured. Among those to step up was TNB, it assisted in providing electricity bill discount totaling RM313 million, organised initiatives such as Bakul Prihatin Negara programme and had been supporting businesses with its vendor development programmes totaling RM12 billion thus far.
