DHL, Pen Aviation To Commercialise Goods Via Drone

Pen Aviation and DHL Express have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to commercialise time-critical goods deliveries using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

Pen Aviation is expected to undertake a proof-of-commercialization (PoC) by this month to demonstrate the commercial viability of cargo drone delivery for port logistics missions before commercially deploying UAV by the year-end.

Founder and managing director Jean-Bernard Boura says the PoC would be followed by a certification exercise with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia before it can commercially deploy the UAV by the year-end.

DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei managing director Julian Neo says cargo drones would be the next generation of transportation in logistics.

Because critical times necessitate critical solutions, the partnership comes into effect as a result of the government’s announcement of 12MPs.

“This PoC comes in the wake of the recent 12th Malaysia Plan announcement as the government highlighted the importance of seamless connectivity and reliability in transport and logistics,” he says.

According to Neo, DHL Express will be able to reach rural communities using drone technology, particularly in Sabah and Sarawak, where critical items such as vaccines, medicines, and medical devices are needed.

Under the MoU, DHL and Pen Aviation will certify and use PEN55V drones to transport shipments over long distances to seaports.

PEN55V, Pen Aviation’s medium-size cargo drone, will pick up and deliver packages weighing up to 12kg from cargo ship decks to ports and vice versa, both during the day and at night.

The PEN55V has a flight range of 50 kilometres, a maximum takeoff weight of 55 kilogrammes, and a payload limit of 15 kilogrammes.
