Social Media Spins New Names For Facebook

Social media is abuzz with new names for Facebook after a tech site reported that the social media giant is planning to rebrand itself with a new name next week, at the company’s annual Connect conference on October 28. The new name could be unveiled sooner, The Verge says, citing a direct source on the matter.

Some trending name suggestions on social media ran the gamut of: Waste Management, Disgracebook, YouTwitFace, Geriatricbook, and Fraudbook.

“Meta” was one of the kinder trending suggestions, referring to Facebook’s reported new focus on the metaverse.

In July, Mark Zuckerberg was quoted as saying, “We will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”

Facebook’s ‘metaverse’ lays the groundwork for a deeper focus on the next generation of technology. This term was originally coined by sci-fi novelist Neal Stephenson to describe a virtual world people escape to from a dystopian real world.

According to The Verge, the new Facebook company name would have something to do with the word Horizon, the name of their unreleased Virtual Reality version of Roblox that they have been developing for the past few years. The name of that app was recently changed to Horizon Worlds immediately after Facebook showcased a version for workplace collaboration called Horizon Workrooms.
