Budget 22: Supporting Malaysian Families, Focusing On Recovery

The 2022 Budget themed “Malaysian Family, Prosperous Abundance” is inclusive and caring for the people, by considering  all levels of Malaysian families and focusing in detail on recovery strategies for the well -being of the nation.

The budget this time supports three main areas: to protect and restore life, rebuild national resilience and catalyse reform.

Through the 2022 Budget as a whole, the Ministry of Works (KKR) received a RM7.306 billion allocation for 2022. The total budget approved to manage the KKR is RM823 million compared to RM1.26 billion received for 2021, while the approved 2022 Development Budget increased by RM6.483 billion from RM6.088 billion in 2021.

To ensure efforts to stimulate economic recovery, the Government will continue with high -impact national infrastructure development projects worth RM3.5 billion, including the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway and Jalan Central Spine. To further boost infrastructure development activities, the Government has allocated an initial fund of RM200 million through the establishment of the Third Infrastructure Facilitation Fund. Apart from that, RM30 million is also allocated to upgrade the infrastructure of Government buildings to be disability (OKU) friendly.

The government will also continue to implement small and medium projects worth RM2.9 billion earmarked for G1 to G4 class contractors nationwide. These allocations include road maintenance projects, repair of obsolete infrastructure and equipment of public universities, polytechnics and community colleges as well as other projects involving social amenities in rural areas.

Preparation in facing the endemic phase of the construction sector is also a major concern of the Budget. To ensure the sustainability of the construction sector to continue to be one of the main contributors to the national economy, several initiatives have been prepared, namely:

a) Small-scale projects specifically for Bumiputera participation of RM200 million.

b) Accelerator programmes through CIDB to G1-G4 youth contractors through capacity building courses and on-job training with an allocation of RM10 million.

c) Education empowerment programmes including technical and vocational fields (TVET) to meet the needs of the industry with an allocation of RM6.6 billion.

The 2022 Budget also saw allocations for almost all states registering an increase with Sabah and Sarawak. Being the states receiving the highest allocations, Sabah and Sarawak will receive development expenditure allocation of RM5.2 billion and RM4.6 billion respectively.

Among others, this allocation is to implement water, electricity, road, educational and health infrastructure projects. In addition, 20 more mobile banks are expected to operate in 250 areas and mukims in Sabah and Sarawak.

The government will continue to improve the well-being of the rural population in an effort to reduce the development gap between regions. A total of RM2.5 billion is channeled to implement various programmes and projects to improve rural infrastructure including road projects, water supply, electricity, housing assistance programs and lighting installation and maintenance.

Apart from that, the 2022 Budget also sees the government’s commitment in continuing the implementation of the Sabah and Sarawak Pan Borneo Highway project. Apart from that, focus is also given to upgrading buildings and infrastructure in 112 poor schools in Sabah and 165 schools in Sarawak with an allocation of RM746 million.

The Ministry of Works welcomes the announcement of the 2022 Budget which will definitely be able to improve the well -being of the people, the Malaysian Family.
