TNB Makes Preparation For Monsoon Disasters

Every year Malalysia faces the monsoon with unpredictable consequences, from mild floods to torrential tides the impact varies from state to state. This year however, the Metrological Department has warned of a major flooding and has folks to be prepared for the worst.

In view of this, utility giant Tenaga Nasional Berhad has been making preparations in order to limit the effects from its customers. The organisation has made initial preparations related to flood disaster management for the monsoon season this time, said TNB's Chief Distribution Network Officer, Wan Nazmy Wan Mahmood.

The goal is to initiate a smooth and orderly flood disaster management every monsoon season, provide safe electricity supply and minimise the damage to TNB installations in flooded areas. To accomplish that, TNB has already held flood coordination meetings with the State and District Disaster Management Committees, conducted training sessions on flooding and ensured that its technical staff were always prepared.

According to Nazmy, mobile generator sets as well as portable generators and critical appliances during flood operations such as boats, satellite phones and floodlights had also been placed at several strategic locations to be ready for use during the monsoon season. TNB will also open operations rooms in flood -affected states to monitor the situation and provide the latest information on electricity supply.

“Since the major floods in 2014, TNB has taken steps to raise the substation site and build flood barriers at the substation entrance to reduce the risk of the substation being inundated and damaged by floods. However, if there is an electrical substation that is still flooded and its operation has to be stopped, the reconnection will only be made after the situation is safe, ”added Nazmy.

Consumers who are cut off from electricity supply during the flood season are advised to immediately contact TNB at 15454 or TNB Careline's Facebook for immediate action. The TNB Emergency Response Team, which is on duty 24 hours a day, will also be mobilised to reconnect the electricity supply that was cut off due to fallen trees and other reasons immediately.

The Chief also advised the public to be careful when using electrical appliances if their premises are flooded; stay away from touching electrical appliances or switches with wet and damp hands to avoid electric shock; and after the flood recedes, enlist the services of a wiring contractor registered with the Energy Commission to inspect the wiring at the flooded premises.
