MAFI Implements R&D On New Varieties Of Padi Seeds

Padi seed research and development (R&D) is being carried out in order to develop varieties that can adapt to local problems.

According to a statement issued today by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI), these issues include saline water, water scarcity, and drought, as well as diseases and pests.

“These varieties will be introduced during the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) period,” said a statement issued on Saturday in conjunction with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s launch of the IS21 Padi Seed in Sekinchan, Selangor.

The government is emphasising increased public spending and investment in R&D to ensure the long-term viability of the production of new rice varieties.

MAFI also stated that the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) is collaborating with panel companies authorised to produce seeds in order to ensure farmers’ access to seeds.

Several companies, according to the statement, have applied to be authorised seed producers for the Kembang Sari fragrant rice and MRQ 103 fragrant rice varieties, which will be released next year.

Meanwhile, Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee stated that MARDI is proactively developing new padi seed varieties through ongoing research and development.

Concerning the new IS21 padi seed, he stated that ongoing development of padi varieties is critical to ensuring that the country’s value chain for the padi and rice industries is not disrupted.

“This (move) is also intended to address a variety of issues and challenges, such as diseases and pests, natural disasters such as droughts and floods, and so on.” “The lack of disease-resistant and resilient padi varieties will have an impact on rice production and food security in the country,” he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today launched the IS21 padi seed, which is highly resistant to unpredictable weather and several diseases.

Since 1964, the government has declared 57 padi seed varieties for common or inbred rice, fragrant rice, colour rice, herbicide-resistant rice, and aerobic rice.
