Ministry Launches Organic Agriculture Program In Sabah

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry ,launched the Organic Agricultue Program for livestocks in Beluran Sabah. Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ronald Kiandee officiated  the event which aims to develop organic food without the use of any mixture of chemicals or drugs food produce. 

Dr. Ronald added that for organic livestock, care is needed and has to be done with proper facilities and ensure the use of any non organic items is strictly prohibited. The prevention and disease control must also be done entirely organically in addition to ensuring food sources and the livestock environment are free of chemicals. For the segment to thrive, the Ministry The Ministry has allocated RM50 million under the Food Security Fund for Organic Agriculture Programs where 1,000 communities can benefit including those in agricultural, livestock projects and fisheries.

The disbursement will be via agencies and several departments and agencies, of those RM13.55 million has been allocated to the Department of Veterinary Services, Institute Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development (MARDI) and the Board of Societies Farmers (LPP) for livestock purposes. “So far, the program has benefited a total of 863 people participants involving 253 communities. Among the projects carried out through the program covers chicken farming, duck farming, quail farming, rabbits and goats, "said Dr. Ronald. 

He added that assistance through this program is in the form of grants among them to assist in buidling coops, buyingchicks, organic feed, equipment and other necessry items. In support of the program, the State of Sabah has been allocated more than RM1 million to implement the Program
 Organic Agriculture which mostly involves Livestock Projects
 Organic Village Chicken. 

Organic food is quickly gainging reputation by top restaurants and health concious people, the industry is worth about US$56 billion in US alone. In Malaysia the trend is more prevalent among the Gen Y who consider various issues before making their purchasing decision including environment, sustainability, food source and animal treatment.
