HSS Founder Recognised For Changing Malaysia’s Engineering Landscape

HSS Engineers Berhad Co-founder and Executive Vice Chairman Tan Sri Ir. Kuna Sittampalam recently garnered recognition as one of Malaysia’s National Technical Figures in conjunction with the National Technical Profession Day 2021.

He was acknowledged for his numerous contributions as the co-founder of the HEB Group, who, together with his late partner, had the audacious dream of building a consulting firm that will transform the engineering landscape of Malaysia.

Commenting on the recognition Tan Sri Kuna paid tribute to engineers, “it is the engineer who transforms the physical world around us to meet our needs. Every road, every railway, every bridge, and every piece of equipment owes its existence to an engineer.

HEB Group with over three decades in the field was formed after the founders made a strategic decision to upgrade their capabilities and resources, and leverage on their niche expertise to compete with and match foreign multinationals both locally and internationally. The listing of HEB Group in 2016 was part of the expansion strategy to finance growth in size and scale. This was followed by the acquisition of SMHB Engineering in 2018 as part of its diversification strategy to possess a wider range of skill sets.

On the road ahead, Tan Sri Kuna commented “Being a leader in adopting technological changes, HEB had begun to use Building Information Modelling back in 2012 and is currently incorporating substantial portions of BIM in the delivery of our services. For example, at the 2,330-acre Kwasa Damansara Township development, our services encompass project management services with the inclusion of where we provided 3D Modelling of Infrastructure, Clash Detection and Resolution and Bill of Quantities. The Kwasa Damansara BIM Model was showcased to CIDB. We believe this was first of its kind.

On developing the nation’s next generation of engineers, Tan Sri Kuna said that the HEB Group had collaborated with local and international educational institutions to deepen and open opportunities to develop, support and enrich further related educational and training programmes.
