Climate Change Pivotal In Federal And State Planning

Right prescriptions can mend the economy

If Malaysia thought that being in a tropical climate and insulated from major natural disasters that are impacted other nations because of climate change, then it was definitely naive thinking. There are some who brush off the recent flooding as the usual monsoon that the country goes through annually, but scientific data shows the occurrence of 48-hour straight rainfall in Malaysia is an anomaly.

All parties across factions need to accept that climate change is real and Malaysia is starting to feel the heat, the flooding disaster in Selangor, Pahang, Sabah, Kelantan, Kedah, Terengganu is the first warning. The unpredictable behaviour of weather patterns is going to give the Metrological department sleepless nights and rest assured that climate change is going to cause all sorts of problems. Malaysians need to realise the worst is about to come.

The unpreparedness by authorities, government, and states showed incompetency when it comes to disaster management. Finger-pointing and blame games overshadowed real work that needed to be done- saving lives and bringing people to safety. The time is now for a comprehensive Disaster Management Protocol on the effects of Climate Change in the country. It should be from a policy level cutting across all ministries, states, and government agencies. The country needs to be proactive and be ever ready for future incidents that can be more severe or disastrous than the one before.

Selangor is making quick adjustments in this regard, Chief Minister Dato Seru Amirudin Shari has considered including Climate change factors into future planning for the state. The 2021 flood disaster has called for the state to make paradigm shifts in its policies. The state was one of the worst-hit flood zones with many districts inundated by floodwaters. However, it’s disheartening that a disaster of great loss needs to occur before climate change is taken seriously.
