Energy Minister Assures 2022 Electricity Tariff Will Not Burden Malaysians

The government has given assurance that the new electricity tariff that is slated to be announced soon will not burden Malaysians, the tariff is part of an agreement with electricity providers on price revision, which will extend into 2024 once implemented.

On worries of the price increase during such trying times, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the new tariff would not be heavy and would benefit nearly 85 percent of domestic account holders out of eight million account holders nationwide.

He added that the government has taken into consideration the country’s current situation recovering from the economic crisis following the COVID-19 pandemic in determining the new electricity tariff. Assuring that the new tariff will not be a burden, Takiyuddin stated that the announcement will be made soon and that it will include industrial and commercial accounts.

Recently there have been concerns among the public and businesses on the tariff being introduced this year, TNB recently issued a statement that discussions are ongoing with the Energy Commission. The utility giant which manages the electricity supply for the Peninsular is dependent on independent power producers who will look to increase prices due to the soaring price of coal. Malaysia still has quite a number of coal-fired power plants and the import of the commodity will impact the cost of power generation.

TNB is actively venturing into sustainable energy sources like solar, gas, and hydro but will take time before they can replace the coal plants. In the meantime, people are urged to conserve electricity, use energy-saving electrical appliances, install solar panels and also take advantage of rebates offered by SEDA.
