Gamuda Succesfully Wins A Mega Tunnelling Project In Australia Worth RM6.5 Billion

Gamuda Berhad via its Australian entity Gamuda Australia has been identified as the winner for the Sydney Metro West- Western Tunneling Package (Westmead To Sydney Olympic Park) or also referred to as the Western Tunneling Package project awarded by Transport of NSW, the procurement entity for New South Wales Government.

This is a second haul for the contractor who had also secured a major deal from the Singaporean Government for the Defu Station project worth RM1.45 billion. As for the tunneling project in Australia, the contract is said to be worth RM6.5 billion or an estimated AUD 2.16 billion. The undertaking will include 9 kilometres of twin, metro rail tunnel between Westmead and Sydney Olympic Park; Excavation and civil works for new metro stations in the Parramatta Central Business District and Westmead Health Precinct; Earthworks, civil structures, utilities, and connecting tunnels for a Maintenance and Stabling Facility at Clyde; a precast segment manufacturing facility at Eastern Creek; Tunnel Boring Machine operations site at Rosehill.

Gamuda will be working with Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd who will provide project management services for an agreed fee.

The Western Tunnelling Package Project is similar in risk to a number of bulk civil excavation and tunnelling projects completed successfully for Sydney Metro in similar ground conditions. The Project will utilise two, hard-rock twin shield Tunnel Boring Machines to complete the majority of tunnelling works, with station excavations comprising ground stabilisation and rock removal.
