JENDELA To Lift Sarawak In Becoming Developed Status By 2030

The Sarawak State acknowledges that with the implementation of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) Phase One (2020-2022) the state could be on its way to becoming a developed state by 2030.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sarawak director, Adiman Ajem, said that several strategic action plans of the state government, such as the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy (2018-2022) and Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030, were the catalysts for the success.

He adds it is important to provide an extensive digital infrastructure of high quality to support the state government-driven initiative, especially in the implementation of digital economy initiatives such as the SPayGlobal (Sarawak Pay) e-wallet application and Kuching Smart City.

The federal government announced an allocation of RM4.09 billion to implement phase one of the JENDELA initiative, to expand and improve broadband services, and also for the transition to 5G technology.

Adiman said that JENDELA phase one involved four main components, namely the expansion of fibre optic coverage to premises, the construction of new 4G towers, the upgrading of transmitting stations to 4G technology, and the provision of broadband services through satellite technology. The state plans to build 824 new 4G towers and has so far completed 82, with the remaining 742 towers completed in stages.

As for the fibre optic coverage, MCMC says that it had reached 76,000 residences and businesses with the rest to be completed by the year-end. The target for JENDELA phase one is to have 116,096 premises covered by fibre optic access.

Giving a full report on the status in Sarawak, Adiman reports that of the 3,014 4G transmitter stations planned, so far 2,400 stations have been upgraded, with the rest slated for completion by this year. The same goes for broadband services through satellite technology of 523 locations planned under JENDELA phase one, 464 locations have been covered.

Commenting on the 3G telecommunication tower in Simpang Ulu Bayan, Adiman said that it was to have been upgraded to 4G in 2020, but only 2G and 3G services were available at that time.

However, under JENDELA phase one, the tower was finally upgraded to 4G earlier this year, covering more than 10 longhouses, to benefit about 1,000 residents in the area, he concluded.
