TNB and PLUS Commit For EV Charging Stations Along Highways And Solar Powered R&R’s

The MOU signing was witnessed by the Prime Minister, Finance Minister,International Trade Minister and other VIPs from TNB and PLUS.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad is taking its energy transformation journey along the north-south expressway by collaboration with concessionaire PLUS Malaysia Berhad. This strategic partnership will see the highways equipped with carbon emission reduction facilities in line with the government’s commitment towards net zero carbon emissions or ‘net-zero emissions’ by as early as 2050.

Both parties have agreed to implement three sustainability initiatives namely developing an electric vehicle charging station network, installation of energy efficiency monitoring system, and installation of photovoltaic solar systems at selected Rest and Relax stops.

Through the collaboration, TNB will set up a network of electric vehicle charging stations at selected R&R stops with high potential of traffic or car parks, while the energy efficiency monitoring system and a 360 kWP photovoltaic solar system will be installed on the Ayer Keroh R&R roof and Tapah R&R (both on the Northern Direction). “TNB will provide a reliable and stable electricity supply to the EV ecosystem including in offering solutions to PLUS to optimise energy costs and at the same time support green and sustainable energy initiatives, ”said the President and Chief TNB Executive Officer, Datuk Ir. Baharin Din.

The partnership will help TNB contribute towards the net-zero carbon emission target by 2050 through its Sustainability Pathway project, joint ventures with various organisations such as PLUS will further assist strengthen investor confidence, especially in its commitment to ESG said Datuk Ir. Baharin.

“This initiative strengthens Plus’ commitment to lead the industry as a highway operator that is sensitive to environmental sustainability. In addition to ensuring that good governance and commitment to the needs of society, environmental management is also one of the main pillars driving the development at the company and becoming the Smart Highway of the Future, ”said Datuk Azman Ismail of PLUS. According to him, this is also in line with other green initiatives implemented at the highway which include green technology in its premises, using pavement that is recycled at the R&R areas, as well as using materials that are more environmentally friendly for its highway operations.

The infrastructure network facility of the electric vehicle charging station is not expected to only attract new users of electric vehicles but even transport operators, particularly multinational companies that want to switch from using internal combustion to electric-based vehicles who want to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.

Since June 2021, TNB has been actively collaborating to drive EV usage in the country, in addition to PLUS, its strategic partners include DHL Express, Sime Darby Motors, BMW Group Malaysia, Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IOT Institute (MARii), SOCAR Mobility Malaysia (Socar) and Ipoh City Council.
