Signify Brings Consumer Safe UV-C Disinfection That Eliminates Viruses

For the past 2 years, Signify has been coming up with solutions for COVID-19 pandemic-handy products for both consumers and businesses in which they collaborated with Boston University and Innovative Bioanalysis to validify the effectiveness of UV-C technology on surface, air and object disinfection.

Signify (Euronext: LIGHT) is the leader in UV-C (Ultra-violet C) light sources and has been at the forefront of UV technology for more than 35 years.

The company together with the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) at Boston University have conducted research that validates the effectiveness of UV-C light sources on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2. Dr. Anthony Griffiths, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine and his team have been working on developing tools to support scientific advancement in this field since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our test results show that above a specific dose of UV-C radiation, viruses were completely inactivated: in a matter of seconds we could no longer detect any virus,” said Dr. Anthony Griffiths

Dr Anthony Griffiths said that the test results showed that the aforementioned dose of UV-C radiation has successfully inactivated the virus in the matter of seconds hence making it undetectable.

“We are pleased with the findings and hope that this can help speed up the development of products that can help limit the spread of COVID-19 virus,” he added.

Signify also worked together with Innovative Bioanalysis to conduct research on the effectiveness of UV-C disinfection upper air luminaires on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The UV-C disinfection upper air luminaires inactivated 99.99% of SARS-CoV-2 in the air of a room within 10 minutes, and the virus was below detectable levels at 20 minutes.  The height at which the luminaires are installed allows the system to disinfect air as it circulates a space, even when there are people present. Mechanical ventilation and/or natural convection, moves the disinfected air back into the lower part of a space. Additionally, shielding and optics in the luminaires are designed to prevent accidental exposure to UV-C radiation for the people underneath them.

“The studies and results from Signify’s collaborations will provide stronger credibility on the efficacy of UV-C solutions and is open knowledge for anyone to use,” said Sukanto Aich, CEO of Signify Malaysia.
