MNO’s Issue Statement On Cabinets SWN Decision And Equity Offer In DNB

With the Malaysian Cabinet finally once and for all decided on proceeding with the Single Wholesale Network model for the country’s 5G rollout, all parties can put their opinions aside and focus on getting the technology off the ground.

In a joint statement by all main mobile network operators who were against DNB’s SWN and proposed for the Dual Wholesale Network model, Celcom Axiata Berhad, Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Berhad, and U Mobile Sdn Bhd have now accepted the Cabinet’s decision and will adopt SWN.

Given that the Ministry of Finance has now stated that a 70% stake in DNB will be offered to MNOs, the equity deal could have been the soothing balm that has gotten all parties to agree.

Whatever the case, now that the contentious matter has been resolved, MNOs will next engage with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, MCMC, and key industry players on further details on the implementation of the model, including the proposed shareholding offer and transaction process.

Malaysia which began trials on 5G back in 2018 has now become the laggard in the region with nations like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand all in the early stage of deployment. The 5G saga due to decisions on whether it will be SWN or DWN compounded by the 3 Ministers helming the Communication Ministry in the past 5 years has attributed to the economy sapping delay.

The government has unequivocally stated that DNB will continue to drive the 5G initiative in the country.
