Malaysia Targets RM77 Billion Revenue From International Tourists By 2025

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) aims to generate international tourism revenue of between RM47 to
RM77 billion by 2025.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the target was through the expected influx of 16 to 22 million international tourists. “The reopening of the country’s borders from April 1 is good news for the entire tourism and culture chain in the country that can now generate income. MOTAC is also targeting the entry of about two million tourists from abroad to Malaysia this year which can generate an income of RM8.6 billion, however, stating that this is just an initial projection.

Commenting during a launch between KTMB and Ola & Oli the Minister encouraged such cooperation and noted the Ministry provides Matching Grant for such activities that can promote tourism. The ‘Kid’s Safe Travel’ campaign is aimed to rejuvenate the culture of ‘prevention is better than cure’ which was much needed at the moment, so that Malaysian family tourism activities could be carried out safely and in a controlled manner.

Malaysia has been short of tourism revenue for 2 years since Covid-19 first hits our shores, in 2019 total tourism receipts stood at RM182.1 billion subsequently the numbers dropped significantly in 2020 to RM52.4 billion. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the tourism industry contributed 14% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
