DOSM: Retail and Wholesale Trade Sales Grew 8.5% in Feb 2022

According to the DOSM (Department of Statistics Malaysia) statement dated 11 April, Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales increased by 8.5% YoY to RM117.2 billion in February 2022,

However, the sales value of wholesale and retail trade slipped 2.5% on MoM basis, due to a 4.7% contraction in the wholesale trade sub-sector.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin attributed the better performance to the retail trade sub-sector, which increased by 10.2% or RM4.5 billion to RM48.8 billion.

“The retail trade sub-sector’s growth was supported by retail sales in non-specialised stores, which grew 15.9% or RM2.5 billion to RM18.3 billion,” he said.

“Likewise, other groups in this sub-sector also recorded positive growth, namely retail sales of automotive fuels (18.1%), retail sales of household goods (9.8%) and retail sales in specialised stores (5.6%),” he added.

“Retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco increased by 8.6%, retail sales of cultural and recreation goods improved 5.7%, retail sales not in stores, stalls or markets soared 25.9%, and retail sales in stalls and markets rose 8.8%.”

On the wholesale figure released by the DOSM, wholesale trade expanded by 6.2% or RM3.3 billion to RM55.9 billion, with growth attributed to other specialised wholesale, which increased by 6% to RM22.3 billion.

“This was followed by wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco, which grew by 9.2% to RM10.9 billion, while the wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals increased 15.9% to RM4.7 billion,” he added.

The motor vehicles sub-sector registered an increase by 12.5% or RM1.4 billion to RM12.5 billion in February 2022, attributed to sales of motor vehicles parts and accessories, which increased 27% to RM3.5 billion.

The increase was supported by growth in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (27.3%), sales of motor vehicles (3.3%), as well as sales, maintenance and repair of motorcycles (5.1%).

The index of retail sales over the Internet, on the other hand, in February 2022 recorded a 19.8% growth YoY.
