Indian CBI Names Bumi Armada In Alleged Aircel Bribery Scandal

Bumi Armada has issued a statement regarding an announcement made on 23 July 2018 in relation to certain news articles regarding an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation of India involving Bumi Armada Berhad and Bumi Armada Navigation Sdn Bhd.

In lieu of the report, Bumi Armada says that it has come to its knowledge that they have been named in prosecutions initiated by the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation and the Indian Enforcement Directorate with the Trial Court at Rouse Avenue, New Delhi, India.

The prosecution is against Palaniappan Chidambaram, the former Finance Minister of India, his son Karti Chidambaram and Chess Management Services Pvt Ltd the company allegedly controlled by K. Chidambaram, and several other corporations and individuals based in India and Malaysia, including Bumi Armada and Armada Navigation.

It is alleged that in 2006, P. Chidambaram illegally granted Foreign Investment Promotion Board approval for an indirect investment into Aircel Limited, and that BAB and BAN had, between 2007 to 2009, allegedly remitted approximately USD92,000 and USD12,000 respectively to Chess, which was allegedly said to be illegal gratification passed on to the Finance Minister.

However, Bumi Armada says the payment to Chess was for IT solutions software and server hosting services provided to the two companies.  

Both companies had attended the hearing in the Trial Court at Rouse Avenue Courts of New Delhi respectively to demonstrate their willingness to fully cooperate with the CBI and the ED and to aid and assist them and the Court in these ongoing proceedings.
