This year’s Earth Day couldn’t be more meaningful for Sunway University School of Arts students, who turned recycled pegs into sustainable artworks in collaboration with the launch of The Body Shop’s new Activist Maker Workshop, the first of its kind in Malaysia at Sunway Pyramid.
As part of the Campus With A Conscience initiative, 23 students from the BA (Hons) Design Communication programme created 12 creative, sustainable art pieces with the theme inspired by ‘Climate Change’. These inspiring art pieces challenge us to change our lifestyle and behaviour patterns and move towards closing the loop for climate change.
The sustainable art pieces were created using recycled plastic pegs produced by The Sea Monkey Project. These pegs were made from recycled plastic packaging returned by The Body Shop customers to the stores. The recycled plastic packaging is also upcycled into detangling combs, tube winder keys and soap dishes.
“Campus With A Conscience has become an integral part of our community life at the Sunway University, and this collaboration gives the opportunity for our students to be part of outreach plans to interact and support our community. We very much hope that these positive engagements will have a direct influence on the community, the environment as well as social welfare issues. They are also wonderful opportunities for our students to give back to society,” shared Angela Chiew, Branding Manager of Sunway Education Group.
Through initiatives and students’ engagement in sustainable efforts and activities, Sunway University hopes to educate young minds and direct their energies toward the complex challenges and opportunities of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
