The Selangor State Government through the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) and the Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan – Incorporation (MBINS) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a joint venture to grow corn grain through the Food Security Initiative Program.

This joint venture aims to explore opportunities for cooperation in resolving the issue of rising chicken prices due to dependence on imported corn grain.

PKPS Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mohamad Khairil Mohamad Razi said the agricultural project was the result of a series of discussions between PKPS and MBINS since the beginning of this year.

“Alhamdulillah, with the signing of this cooperation, the work to implement the corn planting project in two locations, namely in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Langat Selatan, Selangor will begin once the area is cleared,” he said.

Dr Khairil explained that the two planting sites will involve 700 acres of land with an estimated allocation of RM3 million.

“Land clearing work is expected to be completed in the third quarter of this year and planting work will begin after that, taking into account current weather factors,” he explained.

According to him, this joint venture is part of the commitment to stabilize the price of chicken feed, especially in the Klang Valley as well as reduce dependence on imported grain corn.

Apart from that, it is also part of the long -term planning of the Selangor State Government and the Negeri Sembilan Government within the framework of the Compassionate Intervention Program to stabilize food prices, especially chicken in the Klang Valley.

“When completed, this project will be able to produce about 5,490 tonnes of corn grain each year to be marketed to local livestock industry players.

With the current market price of RM1950 per tonne, this joint venture is able to generate revenue of RM10.7 million a year, ”he explained.
He said the MOU would be further expanded through a more detailed agreement document to explore the potential, especially involving other feed crops.
