No Cartel, Ministry Assures Chicken Farmers Ready To Meet Demand

IF the nation is facing a chicken crisis, then according to the Department of Veterinary Services the situation is not because there are no poultry available, but instead, farms were ready to supply chickens to the market.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry in a statement informed that the inspection was carried out following reports that the chicken ‘cartel’ acted to stop farm operations, thus resulting in a lack of chicken supply in the market.

Describing the report as inaccurate, the ministry informed that the chicken farm company had given an assurance that their
farm would continue to supply chicken for the local market, especially processed chicken. However, the farms are facing problems due to high demand during the recent festive season and weight issues with the current stock of chickens due to the quality of feed. Additionally, farmers have also highlighted other issues plaguing the industry including disease infection and extremely hot weather conditions which also interfere with raising chickens on farms, especially in open system coops.

In order to get the industry back on its feet, the ministry has also been looking to expedite the evaluation process for the provision of chicken subsidies to farmers.

The Ministry added it will continue to hold meetings and engage with all industry parties that are directly involved in the supply chain to ensure the continuity of production and supply. The media had previously reported that the lack of chicken supply in the market was due to the chicken ‘cartel’ acting to stop farm operations.

Due to the urgency of the matter, the Prime Minister has instructed the cabinet to move the meeting forward to address the issue soonest possible.
