Divergence with Wall Street Performance, Asian Equities Markets Tumbled Ahead of Powell’s Testimony

Kuala Lumpur, June 22 – Bursa Malaysia closed in red on Wednesday as the barometer index slid 26.78 points, tracked the performance of the Asia Pacific stock markets. All indices of the Asia Pacific region ended in red too as the persistent palpitations about rising interest rates and recessions struck again,  the sentiment of market participants turned risk-off after the closing bell on Wall Street. Expectations of a hawkish commentary from Fed chairman Powell in his testimony have reinforced the negative market sentiment given that the on-the-loose inflation and tight labor market in the US economy.

** The FTSE BM KLCI ceded 26.78 points or -1.84 % at 1,431.10.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1461.13. The index fluctuated between 1,431.10 – 1,461.53 .

** 255 counters are gainers, 381 counters are unchanged, while 640 counters are losers.

** Total volume of 2,728,618,150 shares changed hands; while Turnover of RM 1,901,173,525

** Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) dropped 18.19 points or -0.58% to 3,099.29 ; Hong Kong’s HSI dived 551.25 points or -2.56% at 21,008.34 ;  Japan’s Nikkei 225 shed 96.75 points or -0.37% at 26,149.55; Korea’s Kospi Index down 66.12 points or -2.74% at 2,342.81 ; Shanghai’s SSE Index down 39.52 points or -1.2% at 3,267.20 ; Australia’s All Ordinaries index ceded 18.50 points or -0.28% at 6,682.30.
