Singapore PM Calls On Governments Not To Become Protectionist Amidst Food Supply Shocks

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong who attended the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting in Rwanda has called on countries not to become protectionists against the backdrop of pandemic-induced supply chain shocks.

Lee cited the situation to be worrying but also not surprising that countries are closing their export as supplies for their own consumption starts dwindling. Adding for example the war in Ukraine how it had disrupted the export of grain and subsequently affected chicken farmers and the rise in poultry prices.

“We are food importers, it is a problem for us and it’s something we anticipated when Covid-19 started” Singapore which has been concerned with Malaysia’s chicken export ban has been diversifying its food import of chicken and vegetables. The City State looked at Australia and Thailand for their poultry soon after Malaysia imposed the restriction.

The anticipation of supply disruption was the reason how Singapore was able to cope when the ban was initiated added Lee, the Prime Minister has also asked his Ministries to work on coping with future disruptions as the problem will persist for now.

Malaysia has partially lifted the ban, but the possibility of such an event taking place in the future is giving governments reliant on imported food to rethink their food security policies.
