All 13 States Recorded Increased In GDP in 2021  with 7  Exceeding National GDP

All thirteen states and two federal territories reported an increase in their per capita GDP performance in 2021 compared to the previous year, the department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said.

It said that  Seven states exceeded national GDP per capita (RM47,324), which are W.P. Kuala Lumpur (RM124,232), W.P. Labuan (RM78,032), Penang (RM58,527), Sarawak (RM57,635), Selangor (RM55,568), Melaka (RM47,799) and Negeri Sembilan (RM47,452).

Of all the Sectors, DOSM the Manufacturing sector accelerated by 9.5 per cent (2020: -2.7%), followed by the Services sector by 1.9 per cent (2020: -5.4%) and the Mining & quarrying sector by 0.3 per cent (2020: -9.7%). The Agriculture and Construction sectors, on the other hand, declined by 0.2 per cent (2020: -2.4%) and 5.2 per cent (2020: -19.3%), respectively.

It said that the Services sector, which accounted for 57.0 per cent of Malaysia’s economy, rebounded by 1.9 per cent in 2021 after declining by 5.4 per cent the previous year. The wholesale and retail trade, food & beverage and accommodation subsector declined by 0.1 per cent (2020: -9.5%), affecting states with a heavy reliance on the consumer population. W.P. Kuala Lumpur and Selangor remained the major contributors to this subsector, with economic growth of 1.6 per cent (2020: -5.8%) and 2.2 per cent (2020: – 6.6%), respectively.

DOSM said that the mManufacturing sector, which contributes 24.3 per cent to the national GDP, accelerated by 9.5 per cent from a negative 2.7 per cent in 2020. Rapid expansion in the Manufacturing sector was aided by double-digit growth in major subsectors, primarily electrical, electronic and optical products at 14.6 per cent (2020: 2.6%) and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products at 12.9 per cent (2020: -1.0%). A surge in demand for semiconductor chips in recent years has fuelled double-digit growth in the production-focused states, particularly Selangor (13.1%) and Pulau Pinang (12.4%).
