Foreign Worker Hiring Approvals Are Not Based on Citizenship

The Human Resources Ministry’s approvals for employers to hire migrant workers wouldn’t be issued based on the migrant worker’s citizenship thus, from any of the 15 source countries.

Human Resources Minister M Saravanan said approvals for employers to hire migrant workers will be issued based on the approved sectors for payroll purposes.

“After an employer received their quota approvals from the Human Resource Ministry to hire migrant workers, and after settling levy payments at the Immigration Department, they can then decide to hire from their chosen source country.

“Thus, the Information that stated about the approval of 200,000 migrant workers from Bangladesh is untrue”, he said during question time in Dewan Rakyat today.

He said this in response to Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (Harapan-Kapar) who sought clarification on the ministry’s rationale for apparently approving applications to bring in 200,000 workers from Bangladesh.

In the meantime, while commenting on the question of Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (GPS-Bintulu) pertaining to difficulty in obtaining migrant workers in plantation and construction sectors, he told the employers must leave their applications online to receive foreign worker services. He also said that the ministry has approved more than 200,000 applications over the year.
