Straits Trading Brings Crowne Plaza Hotels To Penang

The Straits Trading Company Ltd entered into a partnership with renowned global hospitality group, IHG Hotels & Resorts (“IHG”) to bring the Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resort to Straits City in Penang Butterworth.

The partnership was entered between Straits Trading’s wholly-owned subsidiary, STC Property Management Sdn Bhd, the master developer of Straits City, and IHG.

The Crowne Plaza Penang Butterworth Straits City (“Crowne Plaza Penang”) hotel will have 343 rooms over 23 floors with a net lettable retail area of approximately 41,823 square feet (“sq ft”).

The hotel will be equipped with a retail podium, as well as meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibition (“MICE”) facilities, making it an ideal venue to host business and leisure events. The Crowne Plaza Penang hotel makes up the first phase of the Straits City development.

Mr. Eric Teng, CEO of Straits Developments Pte Ltd said, “We are delighted to be working with an established operator such as IHG to bring the first Crowne Plaza hotel to Penang Butterworth. Targeting the high-end business travel segment, Crowne Plaza Penang will offer a strong business experience for the modern traveller.”

 With a masterplan area spanning 40 acres, Straits City is a joint development by Straits Trading and Malaysia Smelting Corporation Berhad (“MSC”). Envisioned to be a city of the future, it is situated on the prime waterfront central business district (“CBD”) of Penang Butterworth, comprising an integrated mix of residential, retail, hotel and commercial components with green technologies, such as artificial intelligence-driven security systems and the Internet of Things (“IoT”) solutions.

 Apart from incorporating green technologies, features such as pedestrian-link bridges, walkways, and cycling paths will also be built to further enhance the energy efficiency of Straits City. Upon completion, it is poised to uplift and stimulate the economic and social landscape of Penang.
