The total number of jobs in the economic sector increased by 267,000 during the second quarter of this year to 8.619 million filled positions compared to 8.352 million for the corresponding period in 2021.
The total number of filled jobs stands at 8.427 million with the rate of filled jobs at 97.8 per cent.
Meanwhile, the number of job vacancies was at 191,000 compared to 178,000 for the corresponding period last year. This represents an increase 2.2 per cent.
On the other hand, the number of jobs created edged up to 29.40 thousand during this quarter from 16.18 thousand for the same period in 2021
The rise was revealed in the Employment Statistics for 2nd Quarter 2022 by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, today.
This publication presents the labour demand statistics based on the Quarterly Employment Survey conducted on formal private sector establishments encompassing major economic activities namely Agriculture, Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services.
The principal statistics of employment presented in this report are jobs, filled jobs, vacancies and jobs created by economic activity and category of skill.
Labour Demand by Skill
In terms of share across skills category, jobs in semi-skilled category recorded the highest share of 62.2 per cent (5.364 million), followed by skilled category (24.9%; 2.144 million).
A total of 12.9 per cent of jobs (1.111 million) were in the low-skilled category.
During this quarter, the number of filled jobs in the skilled categorywere 2.094 million jobs, increased by 72,000 jobs compared to the same quarter of the previous year (Q2 2021: 2.022 million).
This category comprising of 97.7 per cent rate of filled jobs and job vacancies of 2.3 per cent (49.3 thousand). Meanwhile, this category registered a total of 9.3 thousand jobs created.
The number of filled jobs in the semi-skilled category rose to 5.259 million jobs (Q2 2021: 5.097 million) with the rate of filled jobs at 98.0 per cent and 2.0 per cent of job vacancies (105.1 thousand). A total of 17.6 thousand jobs were created in this category.
On another note, filled jobs in the low-skilled category increased by 1.8 per cent to 1.074 million compared to the same quarter of the preceding year (Q2 2021: 1.055 million).
There were 36.9 thousand job vacancies with a rate of 3.3 per cent. Additionally, 2.6 thousand jobs were created in this category.
Labour Demand by Economic Activity
Across the economic activities, more than half of the jobs and filled jobs in this quarter were in the Services sector with a share of 51.9 per cent (4.476 million) and 52.7 per cent (4.445 million) respectively.
Meanwhile, Manufacturing sector recorded 2.358 million jobs (27.4 %) and 2.251 million filled jobs (26.7 %).
The Manufacturing sector posted the largest share of job vacancies at 55.9 per cent (107 thousand) and followed by Agriculture (16.1%; 31 thousand).
Meanwhile, Services sector encompassing 16.0 per cent (31 thousand) followed by Construction (11.8%; 23 thousand) and Mining & Quarrying (0.2%; 445). The highest jobs created with 52.5 per cent or 15.4 thousand jobs created were in the Services sector followed by Manufacturing sector with a contribution of 30.6 per cent (9.0 thousand) and Construction (11.8%; 3.4 thousand).
