MOH aware of contaminated Haagen-Dazs ice cream, confident importer has withdrawn products

The Malaysian Ministry of Health (MOH) is aware of the issue of the recall of Haagen-Dazs branded ice cream products from the European market as they contain the carcinogenic substance known as Ethylene Oxide (ETO) based on the European Union Rapid Alerts Systems for Food and Feed (EURASAFF) notification report.

The notification states that there is a recall of ice cream products from France that contain vanilla extract from Madagascar that was found to contain ETO above the permitted level.

The ice cream product has also been distributed to several countries including Malaysia.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, in a statement released today, said: “Since the issue was reported and notification received by the Malaysian Ministry of Health in July 2022, appropriate action has been taken where the importing company has voluntarily withdrawn the ice cream products involved in the market.

Continuous monitoring is also implemented to ensure that the products involved are not marketed in this country.

Ethylene Oxide (ETO) is a chemical gas compound that is carcinogenic and is often used to carry out fumigation or fumigation to kill pests such as insects. It is also used as an active ingredient in detergents but it is not allowed to be used on surfaces that come into contact with food.

The Ministry of Health is always aware and concerned about things that can threaten the health of consumers. If consumers still feel doubtful about the branded products being sold, consumers can contact the nearest District Health Office, channel inquiries through the website http://moh.spab.gov.my or the Facebook page of the Food Safety and Quality Authority (BKKM). www.facebook. com/bkkmhq.
