Asian Bourses in a Sea of Red

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 23 (Friday) – Bursa Malaysia ended lower today with the benchmark index FBM KLCI slid 14.18 points or -0.99% to 1,424.98. Moving in tandem with the global cue, KLCI headed in the negative territory and was dragged by selling pressure on the heavyweights.

The Japanese stock market is closed for Autumnal Equinox holiday today. Meanwhile, Asian bourses closed the trading week in negative note on Friday, tracking the broadly negative cues from global markets overnight, amidst worries about the gloomy global economic outlook following the recent aggressive interest rate hikes by the US Fed and other major central banks and impending recession. Investors are also jittery over China’s economic slowdown and geopolitics crisis in Ukraine.

Australian’s S&P/ASX 200 Index had dived 1.87% on post-holiday trading today, extending the losses in the previous trading session. The weakness was felt across most sectors, led by technology stocks. On the contrary, mining stocks were able to hold up well and bucked the downward trend. OZ Minerals went up more than 1%, Rio Tinto gained more than 3 %, while Fortescue Metals and BHP Group climbed 2%. Gold miners were mostly higher.

Singapore just released its core inflation rate for August. It is recorded an increase of 5.1% in a year-on-year basis – hitting 14-year high. In a jittery move, the STI Index also went south, ended 0.95% lower. The index was dragged by index-linked heavyweights like SingTel, UOB, and REITs.
