No Bounce Back for KLCI, Asian Stocks Slumped As Hong Kong’s HSI Hits Lowest Level

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 28 (Wednesday) – After the S&P 500 hit a new 2022 low overnight on Wall Street, Bursa Malaysia closed lower today with the barometer index FBM KLCI slid 8.98 points or -0.64% to 1,401.89.

Bourses in the Asia- Pacific region closed in red. The laggard, Hong Kong stocks led sharp losses with Hang Seng Index (HSI) nosedived 3.41%. The Chinese renminbi has reached its trough since 2008. The tech-heavy HSI index was dragged by technology counters, and hitting its lowest level since Oct 2011. The losses deepened as investors shunned riskier assets amid slump in local currencies, after a series of interest rate hikes stoked recession fears.

Korea’s Kospi Index also plunged 2.45%, while the Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index plummeted 1.58% as the index was under selling pressure after the World Bank slashed China’s growth rates for 2023 due to ongoing zero Covid-19 cases policy and the real estate crisis.

** The FTSE BM KLCI opened at 1,407.32. The index fluctuated between 1,400.41 – 1,409.13

** 233 counters are gainers, 345 counters are unchanged, while 644 counters are losers.

* Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) ceded 46.19 points or -1.46% to 3,119.31; Hong Kong’s HSI dived 609.43 points or -3.41% at 17,250.88; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index slid 397.89 points or -1.50% at 26,173.98; Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index retreated 48.79 points or -1.58% at 3,045.07; Korea’s KOSPI Index down 54.57 points or -2.45% at 2,169.29; Australia S&P/ASX 200 Index shed 34.20 points or -0.53% at 6,462.00.
