Asian Indices At Lowest Level on Last Day of 3Q

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 30 (Friday) – Bursa Malaysia closed lower today with the barometer index FBM KLCI down 2.87 points or -0.21% to 1,394.63. As investors are shunning away or stay on the sidelines with cautious, risk-off mode

To recap, U.S. stocks tumbled in Thursday’s session, with the S&P 500 hitting a new low for the year, the index nosedived 2.1% to end the session at 3,640.47. Whilst the Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped 458.13 points, or 1.54%, to 29,225.61. Nasdaq Composite slipped 2.84% to 10,737.51.

The last day of the third quarter, Asian bourses ended for their worst month, tracking negative cue on Wall Street overnight. With the indices hit its lowest level since the onset of COVID-19 a result of persisting jittery in currency and bond markets over hawkish talk from central banks, worries about a global recession and rising geopolitical risk.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index has fallen 21.85% for the 6-month period. The last time HSI hit 17,000 level was in 2009. Japan’s Nikkei 225 mirrored the performance of Wall Street overnight and declined 1.83%, dragged by Mazda Motor, Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan Motor.

Meanwhile, China’s Manufacturing PMI unexpectedly expanded in August, beating estimates. The Non-manufacturing sector, however, registered a drop as compared to August’s reading.

* Singapore’s Straits Times Index (STI) climbed 18.73 points or +0.6% to 3,133.81 ; Hong Kong’s HSI up 56.96 points or +0.33% at 17,222.83; Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index dived 484.84 points or -1.83% at 26,937.21; Shanghai’s SSE Composite Index shed 16.81 points or -0.55% at 3,024.39; Korea’s KOSPI Index down 15.44 points or -0.71% at 2,155.49; Australia S&P/ASX 200 Index ceded 80.80 points or -1.23% at 6,474.20.
