TNB Guarantees Supply of High Voltage LRT Shah Alam Line in line with ESG Commitment

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has entered into a strategic partnership with Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) to supply high voltage electricity to three (3) Main Switch Stations along the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project of the Shah Alam Line formerly known as LRT3.

The collaboration will begin at the end of 2022. The LRT Shah Alam Line is expected to be operational and open to the public by 2025.

The Electricity Supply Agreement (ESA) handover ceremony was held last month with TNB’s Chief Retail Officer Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan submitted the agreement to Prasarana Group Chief Operating Officer (Strategy & Development) Dr. Prodyut Dutt.

It was witnessed by the President and Chief Executive Officer of TNB, Dato’ Indera Ir. Baharin Din and the President and Chief Executive Officer of Prasarana Group, Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah. Also present was the Chief Grid Officer of TNB, Datuk Ir. Husaini Husin.

In his welcome speech, Baharin said, “As a partner in the supply of electricity, TNB is ready to cooperate with Prasarana in further developing the transport industry in Malaysia, especially in providing reliable and stable electricity supply to the rail supply along the Shah Alam LRT Line.

“TNB has been committed to accelerating the Energy Transition which includes efforts to increase the enterprise value of the generation portfolio, expand the market focus to develop the Renewable Energy (Renewable Energy) portfolio, investment for the Future Grid and the development of the Electric Vehicle (EV) ecosystem.”

Husaini added, “TNB has started the basic work of this project at the three work sites of the main switch stations with 132kV high voltage electricity supply. Together with Prasarana, which is leading the transformation of Malaysia’s public transport system and services, we have the potential to accelerate the country’s sustainability agenda and meet Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments while ensuring sustainable business growth.”

Mohd Azharuddin said the close relationship that has been achieved as well as TNB’s expertise and ability in channelling reliable electricity supply is critical in ensuring that Infrastructure is able to implement the organisation’s public transport mandate.

“The Shah Alam Line LRT project is part of the Integrated Public Transport Plan for the Greater Klang Valley and Infrastructure is mandated to facilitate and promote and implement a planned, safe, responsive, efficient and sustainable land public transport system,” added Mohd Azharuddin.

The Shah Alam Line LRT line which spans 37.8 kilometers targets the communication network for 2 million residents in the Western Corridor of the Klang Valley, that is from Bandar Utama to Johan Setia, Klang through three Local Authority areas namely the Petaling Jaya City Council, the Shah Alam City Council and the Municipal Council Klang.

A total of 20 stations including two (2) MRT integration stations on the Sungai Buloh – Kajang Line in Bandar Utama as well as the Kelana Jaya LRT integration station at Glenmarie Station 2 comprise this line. In addition, this project successfully created full-time employment opportunities for over 5,900 workers.

“The Shah Alam Line LRT project is clearly a very meaningful project and it would not have been able to become a reality without the full cooperation and support given by TNB,” explained Mohd Azharuddin.

Since 1996, TNB has been providing high voltage electricity supply to Prasarana for LRT 1 (Ampang & Sri Petaling Line) along 45 km with a supply of 29.32MW, LRT2 or Kelana Jaya Line (46.4 km, 58.35MW) since 1997, and Monorail (8.6 km , 7.16MW) since 2001.

Since 2016, TNB has been providing electricity to the 51 km long MRT1 or Kajang Line for an electricity supply of 80.6MW, while MRT2 or the Putrajaya Line (57.7 km, 36.81MW) since 2019. TNB will provide supply to the LRT Shah Alam Line from Bandar Utama – Johan Setia (37 km, 52.06MW) by this year.
