Hong Leong Foundation Offering RM2 Million In Scholarships To 40 Scholars

The Hong Leong Foundation is awarding scholarships worth over RM2 million to 40 scholars under its Hong Leong Foundation Merit Scholarship Programme this year. The scholarship programme is part of the Foundation’s long-standing commitment since 1997 to empower Malaysians of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve their dreams through education.

Quek Sue Yian, Executive Director of HLF shared that unlocking under-served potential has always been the hallmark for the Hong Leong Foundation. “We see ourselves as partners and mentors for all our scholars and our role is to augment potential.  Education is a key pillar in our Foundation as we want to be a stepping-stone for Malaysians to bring fruition to individual dreams and talents. None of our scholars are bonded and we have no restrictions to what you want to study. Dream as big as you want. We support the personal journey of all our scholars with enrichment programmes, mentorship, mental wellness support and supporting their individual passion projects with volunteerism initiatives.”

Quek also emphasised that the Hong Leong Foundation Merit Scholarship is awarded with inclusivity in mind, providing students with the opportunity and freedom to pursue, grow and support their education in any course from higher learning institutions, and even in vocational or skills programmes.

According to 20-year-old Nicholas Anak Bosko Bos, a scholar from the 2022 batch from rural Sarawak shared that a significant amount of his single-income household goes to buying fuel for the electricity generator. He even works part-time to help his father afford meals and support his younger brothers’ education.

“Coming from a rural town or a single-income household never stopped me from giving up on my dreams because I want to give my family a better quality of life and give back to my community. I am very excited and grateful to be an HLF scholar and be given the chance to pursue my education. Staying true to my daily motto of “Explore, Create and Do better than yesterday”, I will give my very best to achieve my dreams of becoming an engineer, and hopefully contribute back to the Hong Leong Group,” said Nicholas.

Meanwhile, Akmal Zahiruddin, another 2022 batch scholar from Kuala Selangor shared that he is interested in pursuing Actuarial Science and is grateful that the scholarship can help alleviate his family’s financial burdens and help him afford university tuition.

“To raise me and my three siblings, my mom faced a lot of challenges and financial constraints and depended on support from extended family and friends. Under the guidance and support of Hong Leong Foundation and Hong Leong Group, I will work hard to do well academically and, in my career, to provide a better life for my family,” said Akmal.
