Malaysian Spending Increases As Wholesale & Retail Trade Grew By 33.7% To RM133.7 Billion In Aug: DOSM

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM133.7 billion in August 2022, registered a growth of 33.7 per cent year-on-year.

The positive growth was contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Motor Vehicles – 185.3 per cent, Retail Trade – 34.5 per cent, and Wholesale Trade – 16.0 per cent.

In terms of volume index, the Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded 27.0 per cent year-on-year to register 145.6 points as released in The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Performance of Wholesale & Retail Trade report today (Oct 12).

The increment was supported by the increase in Motor Vehicles 169.6 per cent, Retail Trade 30.1 per cent and Wholesale Trade 7.4 per cent.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up 3.1 per cent month-on-month in August 2022.

Sales of Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM60.1 billion in August 2022 with a growth of 16.0 per cent as against August 2021.

This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods 27.9 per cent, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis 23.9 per cent, and Other Specialised Wholesale 16.8 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose 0.7 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered 132.3 points, expanded 7.4 per cent year-on-year.

The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (28.2%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (9.9%), and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (8.4%).

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index decreased 5.2 per cent month-on-month.

Sales of Retail Trade

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of 34.5 per cent as compared to August 2021.

Among the groups that contributed to this expansion were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (54.0%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (45.7%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (37.1%).

Compared with July 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up 0.7 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of 30.1 per cent to 166.6 points as compared to August 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (50.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (44.5%), and Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (32.6%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose 1.9 per cent as against July 2022.
