Rishi Sunak is poised to lead the United Kingdom as the Conservative party’s main contender as he finds himself challenging for the post with no possible competition. This comes as the sensational announcement by Boris Johnson who said he will return has pulled out from the race.
Just weeks after failing to lead the ruling Tories, Sunak could cap a stunning reversal of fortunes by winning the leadership post following Johnson’s surprise move.
The candidate requires at least 100 MP’s support for the leadership, Sunak has surpassed that with 150 public nominations from Tory lawmakers. With Johnson’s withdrawal, the only contender left is MP Penny Mordaunt who has struggled to rally support with only 2 dozen MPs backing her. If she can garner the 100 support requirement by next Monday, then the party members of 170,000 will decide who should lead them and the country.
